The Plusoptix A12R is a portable, handheld binocular autorefractor manufactured in Germany by Plusoptix GmbH. It is a medical device used by eye care professionals, especially in pediatric and ophthalmology practices, to screen for vision problems in patients of all ages, including babies as young as six months

• Mobile and handheld: The device is lightweight (approximately 700–800 grams) and runs on rechargeable AA batteries, making it highly portable for use between exam rooms or in different locations.
• Fast, non-invasive measurement: It uses infrared photorefraction to measure both eyes simultaneously from a distance of one meter in less than a second. This makes the process less stressful and more suitable for children and uncooperative patients.
• Refraction measurement: The A12R provides a full refraction record, including sphere, cylinder, and axis measurements, to establish a baseline for a follow-up eye exam.
• Detection of vision problems: The device helps detect prevalent vision disorders like refractive error, anisometropia (unequal refractive power), and strabismus (eye misalignment). It can also detect media opacities, such as cataracts, from the camera image.
• User-friendly interface: It features a touchscreen display (4.3-inch) and a "warble sound" or smiley face to help capture the patient's fixation.
• Documentation: Measurement results can be saved to an SD card or printed wirelessly. For some electronic medical records (EMR), the results can be integrated via a CSV data exchange.
• Versatile use: The A12R can measure over spectacles or contact lenses and can even be used with cycloplegia under certain conditions.
